This is one of the PREMIUM NANTUCKET BASKETS that we carry -- a real treasure to own and is elegantly crafted for the discriminating collector. Since we have just a couple of these LIGHTHOUSE HARBOUR DESIGNS and I KNOW they will be gone in a flash, I haven't redone the entire set of pictures for them. This PREMIUM NANTUCKET BASKET PURSE is IDENTICAL to the above picture EXCEPT for the oval scrimshaw on the top -- the one for this auction is the gorgeous LIGHTHOUSE - CLIPPER SHIP SCENE as shown below... beautifully detailed! Nantucket purses were first introduced in the mid-twentieth century and became status symbols among the yachting crowd that traveled back and forth between Nantucket Island and the Riviera. These feature cane-on-cane with bone knobs and peg closure. not to mention the ornate CARVED BONE SCRIMSHAW sailing ship design on the top of the purse lid... and yes, I said CARVED BONE! THESE ARE RARE & HARD TO FIND --NANTUCKET BASKET COLLECTOR'S ITEMS! This Medium Sized PREMIUM NANTUCKET BASKET PURSE is going to be one of your all-time favorites... Beautifully handcrafted, beautifully finished and the pictures do not due this lovely basket justice! The construction is quality -- fine Nantucket grade rattan is used for weaving with North American Ash wood for the staves and Ash Wood base... the steam bent moveable handle is secured with carved bone knobs and washers w/ brass handle pin. As you will notice, the weaving is whisper thin, allowing for just the weaver's necessary space -- and, as you can see from the below picture of the inside & bottom of the basket, this was woven using a traditional Nantucket Basket mold -- this is sure to be an heirloom! This Nantucket Lightship Basket is finally coated with multiple coats of varnish that will allow it to be as beautiful as it is today for years to come. The elegant NANTUCKET BASKETS are of the Nantucket Lightship Basket style: the solid wooden disc base, the symmetrical ribbed staves, tight weaving techniques, and the use of molds to create a perfect shape that could be reproduced time after time. This style of basketry has deep New England roots. The US Government commissioned a ship to be a floating lighthouse in 1840 to help sailors navigate off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The sailors were stationed for 8 month long duties, which usually consisted of standing watch & cleaning the lamps – and to pass the time, they learned the art of basketry from the local Native American Indians. The baskets the Indians made were lightweight & rather fragile, as they used them to gather berries, etc. In 1890 the craft was moved to Nantucket Island, where weavers used native materials to make a sturdier, more durable basket that better suited the needs of the farming community. They replaced the woven spider web bottoms with a bottom of solid wood. Today, NANTUCKET baskets have become increasingly valuable and highly sought after. Nantucket Basket weavers are no longer limited to their craft on Nantucket Island -- these fine baskets are produced worldwide.
