Description
EXTREMELY    RARE  LARGE  OTTO & GERTRUD   NATZLER     STUDIO POTTERY BOWL, VOLCANIC GLAZE, CIRCA 1940'.     GERTRUD NATZLER (1908-1971),      OTTO NATZLER (1908-2007);     Gertrud & Otto  Natzler left their native Vienna in 1938 and settled in Los Angeles. Gertrud  was  an extraordinarily accomplished  ceramist, throwing exquisitely elegant forms- simple, sensitive, and classic, She  was able to achieve incredibly thin walls in her vessels, yet the  forms retained a  feeling of strength and vitality..They were perfect vehicles for  the  unique, textured glazes devised by  her  husband.  Otto constantly experimented with both glaze  and firing techniques, achieving remarkable colors and surface  qualities.                    Recognition  came  early  to the  Natzlers. In 1938 they  were  awarded a  silver medal at  the  World Exposition in Paris, and in 1939 they won a purchase prize at  the " 8th  Ceramic National" in Syracuse. They participated in every Ceramic National from 1939 to 1966 (except 1950 and 1952)...    Their earliest  works  are  classic  in form and glazes are dry, earthly, and  volcanic. I am very happy  to  introduce for  your  consideration this fine example of the Natzler's work:      RARE LARGE THIN WALLED FOOTED FORM IN AN ELEGANT LIGHT GREEN AND BROWN VOLCANIC GLAZE. Bowl with low foot. Earthenware.  The volcanic glaze creates a  deeply pitted unusual surface, which is surprisingly smooth to  the  touch..  The bowl  is  3 3/4 inches high and 7 inches  on diameter. ( 9.5 cm high x 17.8cm in diameter).  Condition : Very  Good with no  cracks or  hairlines. It  has  two small  chips and one  very  small "flea bite", which  is  very  easy  and  not expensive to  repair,  but  I  prefer  sell  it "as is"  in original  condition. Additional  pictures  available  at  your  request. Estimates between $6000 and $9000 USD  in perfect  condition. Thank you for  visiting  my  store and have  a  happy  bidding!  Please  see  my  other  listings.
