FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - ALL DUE CREDIT IS GIVEN TO THESE WONDERFUL WEBSITES THAT HAVE PROVIDED THIS INFORMATION! WATCHGANDER A publication of the New Jersey Decoy Collectors Association Vol. 7 Issue # 5 May, 2004 ________________________________________________________________________________ Walt Oler would have been 75 this week but he died last week – suddenly at his home on Fur Landing in Chincoteague. Most of us knew Walter either through his carving, collecting or his love of Barnegat Bay. Born and raised in Camden, he and his family alternated between Camden and Beach Haven – both winter and summer – fishing, gunning, clamming and doing bay things all his life. Walt, as his father before him and now his son, Bill owned and gunned Pettit’s point in on the Manahawkin side of the Bay. He sold and retired from his fuel oil business about twenty-five years ago and began carving decoys at the “knee” so-to-speak of son, Bill. Throughout the last thirty years, Walt and Bill Oler were a team at most of the decoy shows up and down the Coast – their style was Conklin and they were good friends of H.C. as well as Bill Cranmer. Walt liked to tell the story of having Hurley visit him in Virginia and he and Billy taking Hurley clamming – Chincoteague style. The day before, Walt and Bill would throw a few hundred clams overboard then the next day take Hurley out; “boys – these clams is thick!” says Hurley and then proceeded to clam right out of his boots. We’ll miss Walt’s kind manner, bearded face, his stories and his decoys. {END} ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECOND PUBLICATION ON W. OLER: DESCRIPTIVE LISTING FOR ONE OF OLER'S DECOYS AT: WYE RIVER ANTIQUES FROM THE PERSONAL ESTATE OF JAMES E. RUSSELL COLLECTION
